集合的主語は、そのグループが一つの単位であると考えられる場合は単数として扱われ、そのグループの構成が個々であると考えられる場合は複数形として扱われる。

• Langley's research staff is well-known for its achievements in aeronautics.
  • 主語の「ラングレーの研究スタッフ」は、一つの単位であるとみなしている。
• Langley's research staff do not all publish their results in report form.
  • 主語は「ラングレーの研究スタッフ」は、個々の構成員が集まってできた複数人であるとみなしている。

most, all, some, half, part, percentのような語は、後に続く、あるいは後に続くと想定される句の名詞の数によって規定される。

• Most of the measurements contain this error. （単数扱い）
• Most of the disagreement between the plots is attributed to this error. （複数扱い）
• Six percent of the chord has laminar flow. （単数扱い）
• Of the subjects tested, six percent rate all the noises acceptable. （複数扱い）

複数名詞の主語も、単一測定値と見なすか、構成する個々が集まってできているとみるかで扱いが変わる。

• Twenty liters of fuel has passed through the combustion system.
  • 「20リットルの水」を単一測定値とみなしている。
• Twenty milliliters of water were added, one at a time, to the solution.
  • 「20ミリリットルの水」を個々の集まり（複数）と見なしている。
