NASAのテクニカルライティング 11 ー動名詞や不定詞の主語に要注意ー

以下の文はいずれも、『位置調整されていないピトー管を使うと、渦成分により全速度を正しく測定できない。』という意味ですが、動名詞usingの使い方が正しいものと間違っているものがある。『導入動名詞句や導入不定詞句の主語は、主文の主語である』ことに注意

• [bad] When using a nonaligning pitot probe, the swirl component precludes exact measurements of total velocity.
  • usingの主語がthe swirl componentとなって誤り
• [bad] When using a nonaligning pitot probe, the total velocity cannot be measured by the investigator because of the swirl component.
  • usingの主語がthe total velocityとなって誤り。by the investigatorとあってもNG
• [good] When using a nonaligning pitot probe, the investigator cannot exactly measure total velocity because of the swirl component.
  • usingの主語がthe investigatorとなって正しい。

ただし、熟語になっているようなものは、主文の主語を気にしなくて良い。たとえば、「Given that ... （もし...だとしたら）」、「Generally speaking （一般的に言えば）」
