Global English 05ー長い名詞句はNGー

平屋（1階建ての家）だったらthe one-story buildingとなる。この「複数の名詞が連なった句」が名詞句。名詞句は３ワード以下にした方が良い。著者曰く、２ワードや３ワードでも曖昧になることがあるという。本項では、長い名詞句を見つけた時の対処法をいくつか紹介する。

単語を減らせ

次の例では、話の流れからSAS/ABC softwareについて論じているのが明白だと仮定して、SAS/ABCを省力している。

• [bad] Editing SAS/ABC Table Properties
• [good] Editing Table Properties

次の例では、MDDB report viewerとapplication dispatherがソフトウェアだと明白な場合として、applicationやsoftwareを省略している。

• [bad] The MDDB Report Viewer application is a component of Application Dispatcher software.
• [good] The MDDB Report Viewer is a component of Application Dispatcher.

次の例では、テーブルのセルがデータを含んでいるのは明らかであるとして、dataを省略している。

• [bad] Change the background color of the table data cells to yellow.
• [good] Change the background color of the table cells to yellow.

ハイフンをつけろ

次の例ではハイフンをつけることで、check handlerというプログラムではなくて、program checkのハンドラーであることを明確にしている（曖昧さを排除している）。

• [bad] If the subroutine detects an error, it should first pass control to the program check handler.
• [good] If the subroutine detects an error, it should first pass control to the program-check handler.

順番を変えろ

• [bad] The recent tax law changes have created confusion.
• [good] The recent changes in tax laws have created confusion.

'sを使ってしまえ

名詞に「アポストロフィ+s」を付けるのは伝統的なやり方ではないが、現代においては問題ない。

• [bad] The WINDOW field data area was not defined because not enough memory was available.
• [good] The WINDOW field's data area was not defined because not enough memory was available.

文の構造を根本的に見直せ

例：

• [bad] The STYLE option specifies the style element to use for classification variable name headings.
• [good] The STYLE option specifies the style element to use when names of classification variables are used as headings.

例：

• [bad] The HBAR statement invokes the HBAR statistic column label option and assigs a label to the statistic.
• [good] You can use the HBAR statement to assign a label to the column that contains the HBAR statics

名詞句に修飾語が含まれているときは絶対見直せ

「キャッシュフローに関連した解析」という意味でcash flow related analysesという名詞句があったとする。ここにrelatedという修飾語が含まれているが、そういうのは曖昧さ・分かりにくさを発生させるので辞めましょうというお話。この場合であれば、cash-flow analysesとすると分かりやすい。

例：

• [bad] The input engines combine the experimental information with some data platform specific variables in the output data set.
• [good] The input engines combines the experimental information with other variables in the output data set. Those other variables are platform specific.

例：

• [bad] Other options, specific to particular file formats are documented in the file format specific chapter.
• [good] Options that are specific to particular file format are documented in the chapter for that file file formant.

例：

• [bad] Change the attributes for graph style specific fonts.
• [good] Change the attributes for fonts that are used in a particular graph style.
