英語-Global English

タイトルにある通り。以下の二つの例は、タイトルの通りに修正したもの。1文が短い方が読みやすいと感じるはずだ。

例１

  • [bad] If Chocolate Bits is set to No, indicating that there are no chocolate bits in the sample batch of ice cream, then the selections for Enough Bits and Size of Bits are grayed to prevent users from entering irrelevant data. （40単語）
  • [good] If Chocolate Bits is set to No, then there are no chocolate bits in the sample batch of ice cream. Therefore, the selections for Enough Bits and Size of Bits are grayed to prevent users from entering irrelevant data. （20単語＋19単語）
  • 【訳】Chocolate BitsがNoに設定されたら、アイスクリームの同じバッチにチョコレート片は含まれない。そして、Enough BitsとSize of Bitsはグレイアウトされて、ユーザーが不要なデータを入力できないようになる。

例２

  • [bad] With design-time controls, you control the look and feel of your Web pages in a WYSIWYG editor environment, and at the same time use all the functionality of SAS/IntrNet software in your Web pages.（35単語）
  • [good]With design-time controls, you control the look and feel of your Web pages in a WYSIWYG editor environment. In addition, you can use all the functionality of SAS/IntrNet software in your Web pages.（19単語+15単語）
  • 【訳】design-time control（というモード？設定？）では、WYSIWYG（what you see is what you get）エディターの環境であなたのウェブサイトの見た目を変えられます。そして、あなたのウェブサイトではソフトウェアSAS/IntrNetの全機能を使用することができます。

とはいえ、どうしても文が長くなってしまう時がある。そんな時は、以下の条件が全て満足しているかよくチェックする。

  • 文に、複数の節がある（ただし、節が3つ以上にならないように）
  • どの節も、この本（The Global English Style Guide）のルールに準拠している。
  • 節の関係が論理的に明確

また、タイトルにある長さまでなら文を長くしても良いというわけでは無い。20単語以下であっても、文を分けてもっと短くすることも検討してみよう。短い方が分かりやすい（誤解を生じさせにくい文になる）ことがある。例えば、次のような用語を定義する場面で、形容詞節は分けてしまった方が良い。

  • [bad] CGI-based technology: a technology that is based on the Common Gateway Interface standard, which enables applications to communicate with Web servers. (定義部分で19単語）
  • [good] CGI-based technology: a technology that is based on the Common Gateway Interface standard. CGI enables applications to communicate with Web servers.
  • 【訳】CGI技術：Common Gateway Interface規格に則った技術のこと。CGIを使うことで、ウェブサーバーと通信するアプリケーションを実現できる。
