Global English 07 ーあいまいなrequire to doー

'require to do'は得てして不明瞭になりやすいので、基本使わないようにするのがよい。

例えば、次の文を見てみよう。

• Two technicians are required to perform maintenance of fuser assemblies.
  • 【解釈１】何人か技術者がいて、そのうちの二人がメンテナンスに従事する必要がある（他の人達には、メンテナンス作業に関する責任は発生しない）。
  • 【解釈２】メンテナンスをするには必ず二人の技術者が必要である（一人では作業できない）。

曖昧さを回避する方法として、三つの方法が考えられる。

• 'required to do'が形容詞句として使われているのならば、関係代名詞を明記する（'that is required to do'と書く）。
• 'required to do'を'required in order to do'に書き換える。
• 最良の方法は、文構造を完全に見直す。

三番目の「文構造を完全に見直す」の例を挙げる。

• [bad] The LOOP statement does not require additional statements to stop processing records.
• [still bad] The LOOP statement does not require that additional statements stop processing records. （恐らく間違った解釈）
• [good] When the last record is processed, the LOOP statement automatically stops executing. No additional statements are required.
