等位接続詞は文法的に等位なものを結合する。

• [bad] Pressures at the bulkhead, the seal, and in the cove are shown.
• [good] Pressure at the bulkhead, at the seal, and in the cove are shown.
  • 修正した文では、一貫して前置詞句を結合している。

同様に、名詞句と名詞節を結合するのもダメ。

節と節とを結合する場合は、論理的にも等位であるかに注意する。例えば以下のような例が挙げられる。

• [bad] The compressor may be operated in the compression mode and then the flow is expelled from the anechoic room to the test duct.
  • 【訳】コンプレッサーは圧縮モードで動作することができる。そしてそれから、その流出物は無響室からテストダクトに排出される。
  • 日本人的にはなんでも「そして」でつなぎなくなり、その訳として「and」を使ってしまうが、このように論理的に等位でない節がandで結ばれていると、ネイティブはこの文が何を言いたいのか理解できないようだ。
• [good] When the compressor operates in the compression mode, the flow is expelled from the anechoic room to the test duct.

受動態と能動態をandで結合するのもダメ。

be動詞（弱い動詞）と普通の動詞を結合するのもダメ。例えば以下のような例が挙げられる。

• [not good] The mixing noise is the dominant component of the spectrum, but the background noise peaks at a high frequency.
• [good] The mixing noise dominates the spectrum, but the background noise peaks at a high frequency.
