主動詞が現在形（あるいは未来形）である場合

主動詞が現在形（あるいは未来形）である場合、従属動詞はいずれの時制もとれる。

• The data indicate that lift increases with angle of attack up to 35 degrees. （従属節は解説）
• The data indicate that the specimen failed in a noncumulative mode. （従属節は叙述（何が起きたかの説明））
• The data indicate that propellers will have a place as a propulsive device of the future. （従属節は予想）

主動詞が過去形である場合

主動詞が過去形である場合は、従属節が一般真理あるいは継続中の動作を表すのでなければ、従属動詞も過去形でなければならない。

• The data indicated that lift increased with angle of attack up to 35 degrees. （従属節は叙述）
• Previous studies had indicated that alumina is a suitable fiber for reinforcement.（従属節は一般真理）

従属動詞が現在分詞の場合

従属動詞と主動詞とは同じ時点に起こった動作を示す。

• Photographs indicating nearly laminar flow justified this assumption.
  • 写真が「層流を示す」ということと、「仮説を証明する」ということは、同じ時点で起こっている。

従属動詞が過去分詞の場合

従属動詞は、主動詞とよりも過去に起こった動作を示す。

• Photographs taken during an earlier test justified this assumption.
  • 写真が「撮影された」ということは、「仮説を証明した」ということよりも、過去の時点で起こっている。
