Global English 19 ーbecauseとカンマの関係ー

関係代名詞whichを習う時に、制限用法と非制限用法を習う。カンマの有無で意味が変わってしまうので、関係代名詞whichを使う時はカンマの有無をちゃんと考える。実は、becauseもカンマに関してルールがある。

because節が文頭に来る時は、カンマを入れる。

• [good] Because we are now able to confirm your order as soon as it is received , your credit card charge will be processed immediately.

becauseの内容がおまけであれば、カンマをいれる。

次の文で最も言いたいことは「デリミタを設定する必要はない」ということであって、「空白とカンマがデフォルトだから」というのはおまけである。

• [good] You do not need to specify delimiters , because the blank and the comma are default delimiters.

becauseの内容がメインの主張であれば、カンマは入れない

つぎの文で最も言いたいことは「syntactic cuesを使うな」ではない。そうではなくて、「機械翻訳しやすいからという理由じゃなくて、可読性を向上するからなのだ」という理由の方がメインの主張。

• [good] Don't use syntactic cues because they improve the output of machine-translation software. Use them because they improve readability.

becauseが主文の全体を修飾しないときは、カンマはいれない。

次の文で、because節はthat is usefulを修飾している。こういうときにbecauseの前にカンマを入れてはいけない。

• [good] This example produces an interface that is useful because customers can select values for columns instead of having to type values.

【番外編】カンマの有無でいみが変わる例

• Click Cancel to return to the program and correct the error.
  • プログラムに戻ってエラーを修正するためにCancelをクリックせよ。（【補足】correctはto不定詞で、toが省略されていると理解する）
• Click Cancel to return to the program , and correct the error.
  • プログラムに戻るためにCancelをクリックし、そしてエラーを修正せよ。
