Global English 16ーandの前後の修飾関係を明確に！その２ー

前回の記事（Global English 15 ー繰り返す名詞句を省略しないー - imakov’s blog）と似ているが、下図のような場合を考える。

名詞が示すものが一つしかない場合

ハイフンを使って、修飾語を複合形容詞または複合名詞にしよう。

• [bad] In a divide and conquer strategy, a problem is divided into two or more subproblems that can be solved by the same technique.
• [good] In a divide-and-conquer strategy, a problem is divided into two or more subproblems that can be solved by the same technique.
  • ここで、divide strategy and conquer strategyとしてしまうと、二つの別々のstrategyがあるように誤解されてしまうので要注意。

名詞が示すものが複数ある場合

修飾されている名詞を繰り返そう。

• [bad] Variable, fixed, and weighted values cannot be changed in the interface.
• [good] Variable values, fixed values, and weighted values cannot be changed in the interface.
  • ここのvalueはたくさんあって、『変化するもの』、『固定されているもの』、『重み付けされているもの』がある。なのでvalueを繰り返す。

• [bad] You can divide the Resource module, Activity module, and Cost Object module pages into up to three panes.
• [good] You can divide the Resource module pages, the Activity module pages, and the Cost Object module pages into up to three panes.
  • 一つ前の例と同様に名詞を繰り返しているが、ここでは冠詞も忘れずに繰り返している点に注目。
