Global English 10 ー不明瞭な「have+名詞+過去分詞」ー

「have + 名詞 + 過去分詞」とくると、「使役動詞の用法」なのか「過去分詞で修飾された名詞を持っている(haveしている)」のかがパッと見で分からない。この形の場合は、ちゃんと読めば意味が不明瞭であることは少ないが、たいていの場合はもっとシンプルな言い回しにできるので、シンプルな表現を考えるべきである。

例1:

  • [bad] If you have access control enabled, then you must specify a valid user name and password.
  • [good] If access control is in effect, then you must specify a valid user name and password.

例2:

  • [bad] An ITSV server is a host that has ITSV software installed with a server license.
  • [good] An ITSV server is a host on which ITSV software has been installed with a server license.

例3:

  • [bad] The software already has the printing functions built in.
  • [good] The printing functions are already included in the software.
