NASAのテクニカルライティング 06 ー複合修飾語はなるべく避けるー

複数の名詞・形容詞を連ねた名詞句は、日本語でも英語でも分かりづらい。ハイフンをつけることで、意味の塊を明確にすることができる場合があるが、まずすべきことは複合修飾語を前置詞句に変更することである。

  • 宇宙実験用の環状懸架位置表示システム
  • annularがどれを修飾しているのか分かりにくい。
• [still bad] the annular suspension-and-pointing system for space experiments
  • ハイフンを使うことで、suspension-and-pointingで一つの意味の塊であるこを明確化している。
  • しかし、annularがsuspension-and-pointingを修飾しているのか、それともsystemを修飾しているのか分かりにくい。
• [good] the annular system for suspension and pointing of space experiments
  • 宇宙実験の懸架位置表示用の環状システム
